Vin Diesel teases us yet again with his involvement in the Marvel Universe as a certain mute character. Will we get a straight answer? Don’t count on it.
Vin Diesel is one of the most dangerous men in Hollywood. It’s not because of his physical formidability or his allegedly decent driving skills. It’s not even his ability to choose ill advised movie projects. No, it’s the mind games that he plays.
It started when Diesel melted nerds’ hearts with his motion capture portrayal of Groot in Marvel’s winning gambit Guardians of the Galaxy. Now that he has a glass up to Marvel’s bedroom wall, he’s got something that we want. And he know it. So when he starts dropping more hints that he has another role in the MCU, those are ssome serious mind games.
The news from io9 is that Diesel’s recent participation in a Marvel block set won’t hurt his chances of being a big part of another project. In fact, according to Diesel himself, that only helps his chances:
“I can totally be something [else] with Marvel, I think playing that role only makes Marvel that much more excited and me having my experience with Marvel, seeing how great they were, makes me more excited.”
It’s not so unreasonable – he’s not Robert Downey Jr. front and center on posters. So if he was going to be in another Marvel film it wouldn’t unravel the quantum logic of the Marvel Universe. After that, Diesel drops yet another hint at a role he’s been circling – or pretending to circle to mess with us – for some time:
“We’ve heard a lot of talk about Marvel wanting to have me play a character that doesn’t have my voice. So my voice is used for Groot and my presence is used for the other character.”
We can assume that Diesel is talking about his potential role in the far off Inhumans project, as silent sonic superstar Black Bolt.
First of all, when Diesel says we’ve heard a lot of talk about this, he should probably mention that we’ve heard 99% of that from him. Second, that talk has been Diesel dropping not so subtle hints on his Facebook page.
In case you aren’t familiar with the Inhumans, they’re an ancient gang of aliens dropped on earth who are responsible for most super powers on Marvel earth. Black Bolt is their leader and he doesn’t talk. When he does, things blow up and away. He’s also supposed to be very physically daunting, given that he’s the King of an ageless race of super friends. Diesel is also very physically daunting, so it makes sense that Marvel would want to utilise both Diesel’s unique voice and physique. Can they do that in two different films? Of course they can!
The Inhumans are being given a lot of nods in Marvel these days, especially in the latest season of Agents of Shield. So hopefully we’ll be getting more confirmation from someone other than Diesel about how the Inhumans movie is going to go down. But as far as Diesel’s concerned, he’s playing Black Bolt. The validity of that depends on how much of a Fast and Furious fan you are.
