Trainspotting sequel is happening with original cast

Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and the rest of the stars return for the adaptation of Porno, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting sequel.

A lot of hot little pieces of news came out of this year’s Telluride Film Festival. One such piece was from director Danny Boyle about the potential for a Trainspotting sequel. The director of the 1996 cult classic mentioned a script existed and didn’t mind slipping that all of the original cast were interested. We didn’t hear much after that, but now it’s all kicking off in the space of a few days. Apparently the Trainspotting sequel is in fact happening, and everyone is coming back for it!

The news from Deadline is that Tristar pictures snapped up the project after reading the script late last week. The script comes from John Hodge, who also penned the original movie back in ’96. Despite showing out of competition at Cannes film festival. Trainspotting was an instant hit and became the highest-grossing film in Britain that year. Could a Trainspotting sequel continue the success?

As well as Hodge and Boyle, the entire cast are planning to return for the sequel. Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremner and Robert Carlyle are all set to reprise their roles as a gang of Scottish heroin enthusiasts. The film will be adapted from Porno, which is novelist Irvine Welsh’s follow-up to Trainspotting.

Boyle wouldn’t say much about the script at Telluride, except that it’s very good. How good? Well Tristar’s Hannah Mingella read the script overnight and acquired the rights the very next day. So yeah, that good.

Boyle has worked with Sony on eight movies so far, and will look after things with the Trainspotting sequel through Tristar. The plan is for shooting to start shooting in late Spring 2016, ready for a 2017 release.
