Interviews with Vampires: trailer for “what we do in the shadows”

There’s been a lot of inspired takes on vampires in cinema over the last couple of years. Between Only Lovers Left Alive and the revolutionary Iranian indie A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, we’ve gotten to imagine the creatures of the night with fresh eyes. Now, we can add a comic vein (pun) to this new wave of vampire stories with Funny or Die’s What We Do in the Shadows. Check out the trailer, straight from Yahoo:

Not too shabby right? The film is set for a limited release on February 20th next year, and stars Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement as one of four out-of-touch vampires being recorded by a candid documentary crew. Clement also co-wrote and directed the film with Taika Waititi, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2004 for his short film Two Cars, One Night. This will be Clement’s directorial debut and we’re looking forward to see how he rocks the chair. The film looks like it could be a real laugh, and has a decent amount of comic and non-comic talent working on and off-screen. The film is unsurprisingly set in New Zealand.

When asked about his inspiration for the project, Clement explained “I’ve always been interested in vampires…All their dramas go over a longer period of time, and there’s not the urgency for them to work through them as a human might have because they’ve got forever.” It sounds as though he had a lot of fun on set two: “With our budget, we could do whatever we wanted. It wasn’t a huge budget like you’d get with a studio film. We didn’t have to answer questions or make things the way someone else wanted it”.

What did you think of the trailer? Are you a fool for Clement’s ghoul?
