Hasty Pudding’s Man of the Year is…Chris Pratt

Forget the Oscars, sod the Golden Globes and stick the AFI awards in the bin with that grapefruit you were supposed to start having every morning for breakfast because 2015 was going to be all about you getting fit and healthy. Was that too detailed? Because if you’re anything like me, there is only one award for actors that can have any real meaning in this modern culture of pandering and engorged box office grosses. That award is the Hasty Pudding Man (and Woman) of the Year.

In case you’re not in the know, Hasty Pudding is a Harvard University Theatrical Society that every year since 1967 has nominated an actor or performer who has made made a “lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment” (the Woman of the Year has been awarded since 1951).

What results from this is a list of recipients that over the years has become a random accumulation of men and woman that have very little to do with one another: it reads more like a dream party guest list than anything else. The man and woman chosen will normally just have done something particularly impressive that year, unless I’m expected to believe that Sarah Jessica Parker, who was selected in 2002, is still making valid contributions to the entertainment industry.

In any case, it’s a bit of fun – there’s parades and ceremonies and all that jazz. The Woman of the Year in 2015 is Amy Poehler, and joining in that light-hearted vein is this year’s Man of the Year, Chris Pratt. Pratt will join a long line of recipients including Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks and James Franco…wait James Franco, really? Ok, whatever.

Chris Pratt in the upcoming “Jurassic World”.

2014 was an exceedingly good year for Pratt, marking a quantum leap into the public eye with The Lego Movie and most notably Guardians of the Galaxy. 2015 will surely be a step in the same direction, with Jurassic World set for release this year. There’s no other really solid news about upciming projects, apart from Pratt’s obvious involvement in Guardians 2. But there’s a big gap between then and now, so hopefully Pratt will be living up to his Hasty Pudding responsibilities by remaining at least remotely relevant. God speed, Chris Pratt, God speed.

Was Pratt your choice for Hasty Pudding?
