Could Asa Butterfield be Marvel’s New Spiderman?

Let’s talk Spiderman guys. Captain America: Civil War is going to begin production before the end of the month (cutting it pretty fine), and for that to work Marvel and Don’t are going to have to pick their Spidey soon. Damn soon. For those out of the loop, this new Spiderman will be a combined reboot with Marvel Studios sharing rights with Sony. Don’t expect it to be simple, but with a new solo film promised for 2017, expect it to to be quick. Well quick isn’t even the word for it, since rumours are already abounding that a frontrunner has appeared in the potential list of candidates.

Screen Rant is reporting that Asa Butterfield is the current favourite for the role as Peter Parker. Young Butterfield is perhaps best known for his work on Ender’s Game a couple of years ago, working alongside Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin. Now, according to Latino Review, he is moving ahead of the pack.

Who’s in the pack you ask? Well a short list of names has been floating around recently, so from what we can tell the current list of candidates consists of Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars), Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), Tom Holland (In The Heart of The Sea), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar) and Liam James (The Killing). Not a bad list right? All making waves in their own way, and all perfectly placed to play the Web slinger.

Why could Butterfield be out in front? Well, for starters he no stranger to action or scifi, and he’s had experience working alongside big Hollywood names, which can of be a boon for a new Avenger. Also, with the latest Peter Parker looking to be in his mid teens and still in high school, there’s a fair discrepancy between the actor’s ages (Wolff is the oldest at 20 and by far the oldest looking). However Butterfield makes a good showing at the ripe old age of 18, fresh-faced but still with blemish potential.
In the end, the choice will come down to staying power and audience appeal. The plan will be to make a lot more movies with this incarnation of Spiderman, so he’ll need to be someone viewers can grow up with. And let’s not forget he’s gotta be loved by viewers – we’ve gotten very critical when it comes to Spidermen.

Who would we like to get the part? We couldn’t possibly say.
