Th Palm Springs International Film Festival has already announced the names of 8 recipients for its prestigious awards: Eddie Redmayne, Julianne Moore, J.K. Simmons, Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Richard Linklater, Reese Witherspoon and the collective cast of The Imitation Game. Now we can add another two names to the list, and they’re more than capable of handling such impressive company.
Robert Duvall and Alejandro G. Inarritu have both been named on the PIFF page as being the latest names in the line-up of honourees. Duvall has been named as the recipient of the Icon Award, following his appearance in The Judge, directed by David Dobkin, alongside Robert Downey Jr.. For his role as the titular judge who finds himself on the wrong side of the law with only his slimy lawyer son to protect him, Duvall has already been nominated for a Golden Globe, an SAG Award and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award. It’s hard to think of an actor more deserving of the Icon Award than Duvall, considering his length and prolific career in almost every pocket of cinema.
Inarritu has been receiving all the right attention for his stunning work Birdman: or, the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance, alongside his revitalised star Michael Keaton. Birdman has been storming the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, and now Inarritu will receive the PIFF’s Director of the Year Award.
Both the Director of the Year and the Icon Award have a legend-studded history of recipients. Winners of the Icon Award include Meryl Streep and Michael Douglas. As for the Director Award, winners include Steve Mcqueen for 12 Years a Slave, Stephen Daldry for Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Jason Retiman for Up In The Air.
If you think that’s all the PIFF has to offer then you couldn’t be more wrong. Well, to be fair you’re pretty close. One more award still needs to be announced, so we can expect that over the next week or two.
The Palm Springs Festival will begin on January 2nd, 2015.
