Don’t Bother Screaming: Neil Blomkamp is Bringing Back “Alien”

Face hugs, face hugs for everyone! If that joke is a mystery to you then you might be equally baffled by the general excitement in the air at the news of a brand new Alien movie. From whom? Well, from Neil Blomkamp of course!

The sci-fi wunderkind had mentioned in recent weeks that 20th Century Fox might be interested in making an alien movie he was connected too. As verbal contracts go, it was pretty soggy and likely to tear. But now Deadline has reported that Blomkamp has officially been hired for the gig. The director himself also teased the news on Twitter with a delightfully unambiguous image.

This is one of those news stories that’s been on the boil for a couple of months now. We reported on some particularly teasing artwork that Blomkamp released in connection to an alien project that the District 9 director was batting around. Unfortunately they seemed to be a pipe dream as Blomkamp was busy working on his latest Sci fi project Chappie. Don’t get me wrong, Chappie looks fantastic in its own right, but the 90’s lad in me got all tingly at the idea of a new alien movie. And from the looks of the artwork it was going to be a far-cry from original Alien director Ridley Scott‘s xenomorph follow up Prometheus, which was more alien adjacent and left a lot of fans pining. The concept was not only steeped in hella aliens, but there were also images of franchise characters Ripley and hicks, played by Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn¬†respectively. Whether or not the two actors will be in any way connected to this project is still very much up in the air, but hopefully something will be let slip very soon.

Some of Blomkamp’s original artwork…both will feature on my next birthday cake.

This is very exciting news for the franchise and for fans. With franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars being handed off to innovative directors like J.J. Abrams to great effect, there’s certainly something to be said for injecting an old favourite with some new blood- especially if that blood is scary green space acid. We’ll have more on this as the story develops, but for now just have a seat, watch all the alien movies again and make wild speculations about what the next film could be about. That’s what I’m gonna do.
