Don’t Bother Screaming: Neil Blomkamp is Bringing Back “Alien”

Face hugs, face hugs for everyone! If that joke is a mystery to you then you might be equally baffled by the general excitement in the air at the news of a brand new Alien movie. From whom? Well, from Neil Blomkamp of course!

The sci-fi wunderkind had mentioned in recent weeks that 20th Century Fox might be interested in making an alien movie he was connected too. As verbal contracts go, it was pretty soggy and likely to tear. But now Deadline has reported that Blomkamp has officially been hired for the gig. The director himself also teased the news on Twitter with a delightfully unambiguous image.

This is one of those news stories that’s been on the boil for a couple of months now. We reported on some particularly teasing artwork that Blomkamp released in connection to an alien project that the District 9 director was batting around. Unfortunately they seemed to be a pipe dream as Blomkamp was busy working on his latest Sci fi project Chappie. Don’t get me wrong, Chappie looks fantastic in its own right, but the 90’s lad in me got all tingly at the idea of a new alien movie. And from the looks of the artwork it was going to be a far-cry from original Alien director Ridley Scott‘s xenomorph follow up Prometheus, which was more alien adjacent and left a lot of fans pining. The concept was not only steeped in hella aliens, but there were also images of franchise characters Ripley and hicks, played by Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn respectively. Whether or not the two actors will be in any way connected to this project is still very much up in the air, but hopefully something will be let slip very soon.

Some of Blomkamp’s original artwork…both will feature on my next birthday cake.

This is very exciting news for the franchise and for fans. With franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars being handed off to innovative directors like J.J. Abrams to great effect, there’s certainly something to be said for injecting an old favourite with some new blood- especially if that blood is scary green space acid. We’ll have more on this as the story develops, but for now just have a seat, watch all the alien movies again and make wild speculations about what the next film could be about. That’s what I’m gonna do.

New Trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s “Chappie” May Surprise You

If you happened to catch the first trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s latest sci-fi endeavour Chappie, you might have thought that the story of an innocent artificial intelligence learning to grow and live in a world turned against it is a heart-warming one. But it turns out that’s only one side of the coin. Entertainment Weekly has revealed a second trailer for the project that definitely has more bite to it. While the first trailer focussed more on Dev Patel’s role as the scientist who is nurturing the robot’s chldish, inquisitive nature, this second trailer has a tone that’s more akin to the Robocop reboot: footage of robot police squads, the people opposed to them and the scientists who see the potential. But as it plays out, we see a sensibility that goes beyond a not-especially-memorable reboot. Check it out, courtesy of Sony:

Quite a transformation right? This movie is definitely going to be a strong combination of action and character development, which is a tough line to walk especially in the sci-fi world. There’s a lot of District 9, a previous Blomkamp project (which also took place in South Africa), in the way this film’s put together, which is a very good sign. Along with Patel, the film stars Hugh Jackman, Sigoruney Weaver, rappers Die Antwoord and Blomkamp favourite Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie. The film will hit theatres March 6th and I’m more buzzed for it than ever.

Are you digging Chappie?

Neill Blomkamp Opens a Twitter Treasure Trove of “Alien” Project Concept Art

Neil Blomkamp is one of those sci-fi directors who fans desperately want to see take on a familiar franchise. Since he crashed the party with District 9, people have been eager to see his talents steered towards a popular franchise and shake it up with his gritty, uninhibited take on sci-fi.

These wishes were almost granted it seems when Blomkamp planned to take on the xenomorph and the Alien universe some time back. Even though the project seems to have dissipated since then, Blomkamp was nice enough to rub some salt into the wound by posting some stunning concept art on Twitter. Along with the artwork Blomkamp wrote “was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph”, which could almost be the epitaph on the film’s gravestone. The concept art includes some interesting takes on the xenomorph, along with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley and a familiar looking spacecraft. The artwork of choice is definitely the alien-ised Ripley and the a badass new facehugger. Check it out, courtesy of Instagram:

Some pretty impressive artwork I’m sure you’ll agree. It would have been cool to see who that strange creature Ripley’s looking at is, and how that new facehugger goes about its business. Oh well, guess we’ll never know. At least we have Blomkamp’s Chappie to look forward to this year. Probably won’t have any xenomorphs in it, but whatever.
