JJ Abrams gets particular about the Force Awakens baddies, and how the dark side’s changed since Return of the Jedi.
Quick, what was the coolest part of the first Force Awakens teaser trailer? Wrong! The answer is the red cross guard lightsaber wielding sith. I’d also have accepted the huge number of stormtroopers post-rebellion. If you did say the sith or stormtroopers, you probably didn’t say it loud enough.
Everyone was all over that weird-looking saber, but we still didn’t have a name. Then we got a name: Kylo Ren, the helmeted bad ass. But with all the answers came more questions. Fortunately JJ Abrams has a few more bits and pieces for us on the bad guys currently roaming the galaxy.
Empire recently sat down with Abrams for its latest issue, during which the topic of the dark side adjacent enigma came up. And from out of nowhere, the nuggets of knowledge come thick and fast.
First off, the Empire leftovers, known as the First Order, have an intriguing back story. Here’s what Abrams had to say:
“That all came out of conversations about what would have happened if the Nazis all went to Argentina but then started working together again?’” Abrams reveals. “What could be born of that? Could The First Order exist as a group that actually admired The Empire? Could the work of The Empire be seen as unfulfilled? And could Vader be a martyr? Could there be a need to see through what didn’t get done?”
So the First Order looks to be more fan club than faction. Will we see “I Heart Vader” badges or Obi wan effigies flying around. We can only hope.
But that’s not all we learnt! Turns out the reason that Kylo Ren isn’t called Darth Ren as you’d expect is because that dude ain’t no sith! Here’s what Abrams had to say:
“Kylo Ren is not a Sith… He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”
Snoke may sound like a Willy Wonka candy cigarette, but he’s even more horrifying. In case you don’t know, Snoke will be motion captured by Andy Serkis, who did a tone poem as the character for the teaser’s voice over.
I know what you’re thinking. The official Star Wars celebration is tomorrow, and with that the promise of not only a poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens but a fully fledged trailer as well. With that in mind, couldn’t this juicy piece of Episode VII filet be kept aside until then. I suppose you’re right, except you’re totally wrong! Granted, tomorrow promises to be a hailstorm of Star Wars movie news, but this is a marathon, not a sprint. You can’t just dive headfirst into all the news tomorrow, you’ll pull a hammie for sure. So think of this reveal of the the new stormtrooper costumes in full as some light stretching before the race starts.
Screenrant us reporting that in the preparation for the celebration, an Instagram was posted of the official programme for the show, which happens to include a full body stormtrooper image. Check it out below, courtesy of Instagram:
Exciting stuff right? If you look at the original trailer for Force Awakens you can see that the helmet matches up perfectly with the platoon, and the chest portion is identical to the one sported by John Boyega. It’s certainly a very Abrams-esque take on a classic design, making advancements without doing the original armour a disservice. All we need now is to see how the suit looks in action!
Force Awakens hits theatres on December 25th 2015.
And now that you’ve had your starter, here’s the main course sucker! A new trailer for The Force Awakens. It’s awesome – you’ve been warned. Fresh from Youtube:
I’ll let you sit with that for a while. We’ll be seeing you in four days for that Batman vs Superman trailer we’ve heard so much about.
Even if you’re not crazy about the marvel universe or getting psyched about the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron première, you might be just as eager for the release so that you can get a sneaky glimpse of the latest Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s definitely the second most exciting think about the release, but that may not be the only time the trailer is being revealed. It may not even be the earliest time it’s being revealed! Don’t try with me, I hear you cry. Of you’ve got some news then spill it! Will do, threatening readers, will do.
There are rumours coming out of Slashfilm and Collider that something big will be going down at the Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim in mid-point, based mainly on a suggestion by JJ Abrams that the celebration will be starting off in a big way. What could that mean? Well it could be big news, or a big trailer. But in any case, it sounds as though there will be a poster involved!
For every speculation about the upcoming trailer there’s another three about the nature of the Force Awakens poster. Don’t trust my data? I don’t blame you since I just made them up. In any case people are curious. Will it be traditional and take the multi character artistic portrait of the entire movie? Seems unlikely, since that might give too much of the movie away and a lot of it is still under wraps. Perhaps it will be a teaser poster? Not as descriptive but sets a tone and a precedent. Think of the young Anakin Skywalker and his Darth Vader shadow for the Phantom Menace teaser?
In any case, it will be taking pride of place on my wall for the foreseeable future. If the trailer does appear at the celebration then that’s awesome, but even if we just get a look at the poster then I think I could manage. How about you?
The Star Wars Celebration will take place on April 16th.
Just a quick update on Star Trek 3 before Christmas Day!
It’s cold out there, it’s real cold. We need something to look forward to, something warm to think about until Spring. Well, we have just the thing. Deadline has reported that just 17 short months from now, on July 6th 2016 to be exact, we will be sitting down in cinemas across the country to watch Star Trek 3.
What’s that? It’s too far away to get excited about? Oh fine then be a grinch about it.
Seriously though, we’re getting a good stream of info on the latest in the franchise that was rebooted in 2009 by J.J. Abrams. After Roberto Orci left the director’s chair and settled into the not-quite-as-luxurious-or-comfortable producer’s chair, we found out after a lengthy vetting process that Fast and Furious director Justin Lin would take the helm. Now, we have a confirmed date of release to along with a new director.
I’m sure there are still Trekkers out there that will be sobbing into their figgy puddings tomorrow now that the rumours that “Commander Riker”Jonathan Frakes would direct have been effectively photon torpedoed. But a solid release date to pop on the calendar should certainly help.
Well, you won’t be putting it on this year’s calendar, obviously. Just wait until next Christmas and pop it on the 2016 calendar.
Well, that about does it. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals!
Feel like a little bit Star Wars news to brighten up your day? Why wouldn’t you?
Word has come through from Entertainment Weekly that names of some of the characters in the latest Star Wars chapter have been revealed. This comes a good few weeks after the teaser trailer that broke every record on the planet. With that in mind, what the heck am I waiting for? Here are the names!
- BB-8, the ball droid
- Poe Dameron, the X-wing pilot (Oscar Isaacs)
- Kylo Ren, the mystery wielder of the “broad-saber”
- Rey, the scavenger who was previously code-named “Kira” (Daisy Ridley)
- Finn, a man “on the run” (John Boyega)
So we can finally put a few names to faces, in particular to the cyaracters played by John Boyega, Oscar Isaacs and Daisy Ridley. And we now have a name for the sinister sith with the controversial lightsaber! Granted we don’t know who’s playing him but that will all come in good time. At least we know what to call that crazy rolling droid.
Cast members yet to be named include Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. Also, who is Harrison Ford gonna be playing? Just kidding, he’s like an orc or something right?
Is J.J. Abrams keeping you interested?
