For a film that we know surprisingly little about, there’s a lot of reasons to get excited about Legendary’s upcoming project Kong: Skull Island. Well, there were actually three reasons to get excited: Kong, obviously, Thor villain Tom Hiddleston and Whiplash Villain J.K Simmons are all on board. But now we have another name joining the expedition onto the prehistoric island: that’s right, it’s history’s greatest Michael, Birdman‘s Michael Keaton!
Keaton is currently in talks to finalise his role in the film that will act as a prequel to King Kong and take place almost completely on the great ape’s original stomping ground.
Who will he be playing? Well, there’s really nothing to go on character-wise right now, for any of the actors involved. But that’ not necessarily a bad thing: For such a well known franchise, there’s really nothing that we can knowingly expect from this film, aside from the ape himself. So, much like Rise of the Planet of the Apes, We could be seeing a much-loved concept combined with an entirely original storyline and batch of characters.
Let’s not forget that the actors now named in this project have all had a great twelve months – we’ll most likely be seeing Simmons and Hiddleston in the Oscar race considering the hefty dose of awards buzz they’ve gotten so far. Unfortunately, Hiddleston’s Only Lovers Left Alive may not have been timed quite right for a nomination, especially considering the competition from Selma, The Imitation Game and Theory of Everything later in the year. But he is in the next Avengers film, so he’ll probably be fine. So there’s no doubt in the strength of the cast – all we need now is a story. Unfortunately, since release for this particular creature feature won’t be util March 2017, we’ll be waiting a while for that trailer.
Kong: Skull Island will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts of Kings of Summer fame with a script from John Gatins (Real Steel) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla).
