Benedict Cumberbatch officially marvel’s “doctor strange”

Names are being named…

Marvel Studios have officially announced that Star Trek Into Darkness and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Universe. There was some speculation about Cumberbatch taking on the role earlier in the year, but nothing was official until he re-entered negotiations to star in the Phase Three film.

Doctor (Stephen) Strange begins as a hot-shot surgeon who has everything, only to lose it all when a car accident renders him unable to operate. Searching desperately in every corner of the earth for a treatment, Strange becomes wrapped up in a world of magic, sorcery and, you guessed it, impending evil.

Doctor Strange…way more magical than Doctor Who.

Cumberbatch is the only actor to be officially cast in the film, set for release in theaters November 4, 2016. On choosing Cumberbatch for the role, Kevin Fiege of Marvel explained “Stephen Strange’s story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity,” said Producer Kevin Feige. “In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character.”

Sounds like they have a lot of faith in the star who is already turning heads with his portrayal of Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, which is already a solid Oscar hopeful. Who knows where this latest role will take him?

In terms of multi-film contracts, there is no mention of a sequel to Doctor Strange in the current lineup of Marvel films running up to 2020. The odds are, since Strange is a relative unknown despite being a fond fan favourite, Marvel will be waiting to see how the first feature turns out before they even consider Strange 2. But that’s not to say that Cumberbatch won’t be weaving his magic in other Marvel films.

Along with the two Thor films, this will be the latest Marvel film to include magic as opposed to to science or space. It’ll be interesting to see how they tie Strange into the ever-expanding Marvel Universe.

Is this the best news you’ve had all week? Was Cumberbatch your favourite for the part?
