“Star Trek 3” and “Guardians 2” Get Titles – It’s Titles Tuesday!

It’s Tuesday, and everyone knows that Tuesday is the day that studios reveal the official titles of their long anticipated space based projects. What? That’s not true? Ok whatever I’m just trying to tie this stuff together. In any case, we’ve got the official names of the next Star Trek and Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Let’s start with Trek. Justin Lin has revealed on Twitter by way of a debonair hash tag that the new project is called Star Trek Beyond. This is more or less what Simon Pegg implied a few months back but it’s good to get a little confirmation. Star Trek Beyond began production in Vancouver last week with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg returning with the test of the original crew. Pine and Quinto have also already signed on for Star Trek 4, slipping a handsome raise into the contract for good measure.

I’m a big fan of the title. I’m not a huge fan of the colon + random buzz word formula and Star Trek into Darkness was a welcome vacation from the norm. There was a hope that Star Trek Beyond would continue to experiment with the title but a lack of colons altogether is more than enough for me.

Moving right along, we’ve had a double reveal for the title of Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Both Kevin Feige via Collider and James Gunn via Twitter confirmed that the title would be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. For those who didn’t see the first one, the title is a play on Chris Pratt‘s character Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix Volume 1 that acted as the excellent soundtrack for the movie.

Similar to Star Trek Beyond, we have very little concrete information about the movie. We know that Quill will encounter his father and there will be more emotions flying around, while Star Trek promises more action from Pegg and some Klingons.
So now we’ve got the names down, there’s no reason they shouldn’t tell us every other bit of information. So, you know, whenever you’re ready guys.

Star Trek Beyond is set to go boldly on July 8th 2016, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will land April 28th 2017.

Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine Sign on for “Star Trek 4”

Unless you’re True Detective, if your franchise is going to last it’s largely dependent on the cast sticking around for the long haul. While this is normally a process that happens right at the start or between movies, some key members of the Star Trek crew have already agreed to stay on the bridge for the foreseeable future.

Empire is reporting that Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, who have played Jim Kirk and Spock respectively in the last two Star Trek films, have signed contracts to star in Star Trek 4, while they’re still in the process of making Star Trek 3. Currently titled Star Trek Beyond, the third in the series has just moved into production, so a pledge to carry on for another film is a tremendous show of faith or some other force is at work. By that I mean studio influence, not magic or anything.

It’s not all good faith however. Both Pine and Quinto have negotiated a handsome salary rise for their troubles. There’s no word as yet on whether Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg or any of the other regulars have signed in for Star Trek 4 – The Search for More Money as yet, but there’s every chance that they’ll follow suit. Justin Lin, the new director for Star Trek 3, has made no mention of any future plans either. As for the film itself, we’ve got very little information to go on to measure it’s weight class, apart from insinuations about Klingons and vows from Pegg to get elbow deep in some action thus time around.

There’s obviously no confirmation here that Paramount are even remotely interested in a fourth Trek, so Pine and Quinto’s contracts could be considered more of an just in case insurance policy than anything else. However, if Star Trek 3 can continue the momentum of Into Darkness, it could be a prudent investment indeed.

Would you sign on for Star Trek 4?

Rumour Alert! Idris Elba Suspected to be “Star trek 3” Villain

If the latest Star Trek series has being boldly going where no one had gone before, it’s also boldly been going to England for talent. Benedict Cumberbatch made some phenomenal waves the last go around with his striking portrayal of Khan in Star Trek into Darkness, and now they might be bringing on another BBC darling for the as yet untitled Star Trek 3.

Screenrant reports that Luther and The Wire star Irish Elba may be in talks to star as the villain in the next movie. The rumour comes from Variety and has some other potentially delicious details for the latest Enterprise adventure: apparently shooting may be later than we anticipated, starting in June instead of May, and that the plot could involve klingons! If this is in any way true, we could be seeing Elba don a ridged forehead and dust off his old klingon dictionary (all actors have one, it’s great for monologues).

Of course this is all speculation, and we could be building to a Star Trek finale without a whiff of a klingon. This sort of rumour churning is easy with a project like Star Trek 3 that’s had such muddling and overhauling in terms of script and direction. With the departure of Roberto Orci from the helm and his relegation to producer, not to mention the hiring of Fast and Furious director Justin Lee to step into Orci’s shoes, the waters have been muddied and in low visibility rumours abound.

Orcs himself has alluded to ideas he had for a daring new plot for the Star Trek crew that may have been cast out. It would be an absolute treat to see Elba work his magic on the Star Trek set. He would be joining returning actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg and Alice Eve. Elba’s also no stranger to scifi adventures, earning his chops on Prometheus and Pacific Rim. But which film will Star Trek 3 be more like?
