“King Kong v Godzilla” – What We Know

Let them fight! The grand monster finale King Kong v Godzilla has been pencilled in for an epic 2020 release to tie off the Legendary shared universe.

First it was a ridiculous rumour. Then it was a potential possibility. Then we started complaining that this potential project was ridiculous. Then we all started wondering what the lego sets would look like. Now it’s just been made official. Enormous ape King Kong and radioactive reptile Godzilla will duke it out on the big screen.

Rumours about King Kong v Godzilla started circling a month or so back that Legendary Pictures were in talks with Warner Bros. to bring the upcoming Kong: Skull Island back to the studio after switching to Universal. So the fantasies started flying, and now they turn out to be true.

According to Screen Rant, the monster mash-up is scheduled for a 2020 release, as confirmed by Warner Bros. Here’s the statement they released:

“All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases”

That’s an awful lot of information for one blurb. That heroes reference is a decent cap tip to the comic book masters of shared universes and extensive schedules. From the looks of it we’ll have Godzilla and Kong facing off and maybe teaming up to face all these other monsters.

Monarch will probably play a SHIELD-style role in King Kong v Godzilla, keeping track of the “heroes” and giving them cheesy pep talks. It’s also likely we won’t be limited to the monsters we’re familiar with. We may get a Rodan or Mothra but these will be interspersed with new creations. That’ll certainly throw villain-guesses out the window.

So what’s the plan from here? Well, Kong: Skull Island starts shooting soon with a May 2017 release planned. Then we get a Godzilla sequel in 2018. After that, the two will meet up in King Kong v Godzilla in 2020.
It’s still unclear how the size disparity between the two will be resolved, or how involved the human race will be. But these are all conversations for another day. With any luck we’ll be getting more news on this shared universe soon.
