Star of new movie Dwayne Johnson confirms that the his Jumanji movie will be a sequel to the original instead of a reboot. Read more after the jump.

First we had Jumanji: magical animal board-game romp with Robin Williams and a miniature Kirstin Dunst. Then we had Zathura: magical space board-game romp without a Robin Williams in sight. Now we have a new Jumanji movie in our sights. The assumption has been that the movie would start from scratch and build up a new mythos for the board-game. The concept of a board-game with a whole world of dense jungle and fearsome creatures is grounds for a dozen awesome plots. But now we’ve seen a twist before the movie even comes it. Turns out it won’t be a reboot but an honest-to-Zod sequel.

Dwayne Johnson revealed the news, according to Slashfilm. The star of the new Jumanji movie just finished up working on Fast 8 and share his next moves on social media. Here’s what Johnson had to say on Instagram:

“And now in two weeks I’ll reunite with ol’ friends Kevin Hart & Jack Black and we have the honor to introduce a whole new generation to the amazing world of #JUMANJI. *(for the record we are NOT making a reboot, but rather a continuation of the awesome JUMANJI story). It’s also crazy to me how much me, Kev and Jack look like triplets when we’re together… Man this is gonna be FUN.”

We’re definitely jazzed that Johnson is so jazzed about the movie – that guy’s enthusiasm is infectious! More importantly he’s made it unequivocally clear that his Jumanji movie will follow on from Robin Williams‘. This makes comments that Johnson made about the movie honouring Williams’ memory a lot clearer.

It would be easy to think that this revelation somehow limits the directions the movie could go in. This can only be good news right? We already know that the movie has a solid cast in the form of Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black.  The film should definitely have an extra dollop of depth if it follows on from the original. The question is how much of the film will rely on references or plot points of the original. It’s gonna be exciting to find out!

Sony’s Jumanji sequel will hit theatres next summer on July 28th 2017. Watch this space for all the latest Jumanji movie news.
