Lock up your daughters, and your safe if you have one. Baby Driver will see Hamm getting up to no good as a bank robber for the World’s End director.
After finally picking up an emmy for his seminal role in Mad Men, what is Jon Hamm going to do next? More Mad Men? Sadly no, since the show ended it’s final season this year. But fortunately you won’t have to wait too long to see Jon Hamm acting up a morally ambiguous storm again. We can thank Edgar Wright for that, since he’s just cast Hamm in his next film, Baby Driver.
According to Slashfilm, the news is that Hamm will be joining Lily James, Jamie Foxx and Ansel Elgort in the latest project from the Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead director. The film will see Elgort playing a young getaway driver who constantly plays a personal soundtrack to block out a constant ringing in his ears. Lily James will star as a waitress and Elgort’s love interest. But what about Hamm? Well, he’ll be playing a no-good bank robber on a job put together by slightly more no-good criminal Jamie Foxx.
While Hamm is recognisable as a dramatic actor, he’s no stranger to working with comedy directors. You might recall Hamm’s turn as an egomaniacal meat-head in Paul Feig‘s Bridesmaids opposite Kristen Wiig. However, he’ll also be able to draw on some dramatic of his work as well, having played an FBI agent foiling bank robbers in The Town. The question is will the Hamm stick to his bad guy guns, or will he take on a Don Draper-like ethical complexity?
This is the second major project Wright has written and directed after Scott Pilgrim Vs The World without frequent collaborators Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. However, he has kept the crew much the same, bringing back Wright veterans Nira Park, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner. Once again, Wright has gathered together a talented cast, the Hamm included.
Baby Driver will start shooting later this year for a March 17th 2017 release.
