It’s all Highway: “Super Troopers 2” is a Go

When it comes to the world of movies, the phrase “the audience has spoken” is a powerful one. It gets thrown around all the time when the movie going public take matters into their own hands when it comes to what they want to see, and speaks to the strong sense of community that not only still exists in this time of digital isolation, but thrives on it.

With that ridiculously pompous intro in mind, movie-making funny-men Broken Lizard recently set up an Indiegogo account to get a Super Troopers sequel off the ground. Guess what? The audience has spoken.

The Wrap reports that in the short space of 48 hours, the team behind Club Dread, Beerfest and of course Super Troopers has been able to secure it’s 2 million target. The fund was made possible by some 22,000 (21, 647 backers as of 7:33 p.m. PDT to be precise) who gave their own money to see the project get made.

The original Super Troopers followed a group of small town highway patrolmen fighting with the local police officers to prove their worth when department closure is threatened. There are also drug busts, giant cotton candy, naked dudes and randy Germans. The film is perhaps most fondly known for the games and pranks that the patrolmen play on unsuspecting drivers.

This will be the first sequel that broken Lizard have taken on, and it’s been circling the rumour pool pretty much since the first film started accumulating a cult following.

The Broken Lizard team, which consists of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske has already released a video thanking the contributors for their generous donations. It’s unclear whether or not donations will keep being accepted or whether we’ll be seeing another million or two roll in over the next few days. What we do know is that Fox has agreed to distribute and production should begin later this year.

I feel like watching Super Troopers again… Right meow.
