Chilling Images for Iñárritu’s “The Revenant”

Leonardo DiCaprio looks a little lost in the latest stills from Birdman director Iñárritu’s newest project The Revenant.

With the latest Oscar season peeking it’s shiny golden noggin over the horizon, it’s hard to imagine that it’s been nearly a year since Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s Birdman took to the screen and ruffled our fathers in the best possible way. You get one bird pun, that’s it. So it’s no surprise people are desperate to see what comes next from award-winning director. The Revenant, Iñárritu’s latest project, has had its fair dose of secrecy. But now we have the first official images from what looks to be a chilling tale. Pop some bibs on your eyes, this is gonna be a visual feast. Fresh from Empire:

There’s certainly no lack of striking imagery here. Leonardo DiCaprio has gone all out as Hugh Glass, a fur trapper on a treacherous expedition in South Dakota. Set in the 1820’s, this adaptation of Michael Punke‘s novel sees Glass mauled and left for dead by his cohorts. A looting and some premature burying later, Glass is fixing for some revenge. And quite right too. DiCaprio has no trouble looking like a feral lost soul. We also get a look at Tom Hardy, who plays one of DiCaprio’s ex-hunting buddies.

The most spectacular visual is the mountain of cow skulls, courtesy of cinematographer extraordinaire Emmanuel Lubezki. The bleakness of the scene is a promise that Iñárritu won’t shy away from the savagery of the time and setting.

In an interview with Yahoo, production designer Jack Fisk extrapolated on the lengths they went to to make the shots authentic:

Almost all lighting sources used for filming were natural, explains Fisk. “And this takes place before the kerosine lantern was invented.” Most filming took place between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. “We’d be scrambling at the end of the day to film the last few hours of daylight.”

Fisk also recalled when the harsh terrain froze a rive right in front of the cast and crew:

“The set flooded with ice water as Alejandro was trying to get his scene,” he said. “It was the equivalent of shooting in a hurricane.”

It’s no secret that The Revenant hasn’t been the easiest set to work on. There’s been no shortage of rumours about disagreements and revolting crew, and this news from Friday so goes a long way explaining that. But it looks like all that chagrin has paid off with a pretty spectacular looking movie. Let’s hope the images are accurate!
