Hans Zimmer is retiring from superhero films

Dawn of Justice will be the last superhero movie Hans Zimmer will work on, after composing 5 of them from Batman Begins to Dawn of Justice.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll have a big place in your heart for Hans Zimmer. Even if you’re not familiar for his landmark 90’s film composing on projects like The Lion King and The Thin Red Line, then you’ll know him for his modern day work. Since 2005 Zimmer has been working consistently on superhero movies Beginning with Batman Begins, the composer worked on the entire Christopher Nolan trilogy. Since then he has put his name to both Man of Steel and the latest instalment in the DCEU, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But even though he’s such a household name in comic book shops across the world, the composer may very well be hanging up his cape and tights for good.

The news from the BBC is that Zimmer, who has composed music for over 150 films, will be retiring from the superhero movie business. In an interview with BBC HARDtalk, the composer spoke about how committed he was to the Nolan trilogy, and how much it took out of him:

“I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight Trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life.”

This is a fairly eye-opening message from Zimmer, and speaks to how invested he becomes in his work. He also spoke briefly about Dawn of Justice, and the difficulties he had finding inspiration for the DC heavyweight bout:

“This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language.”

Well the good news is that Hans Zimmer isn’t retiring completely, which is definitely a relief. It will certainly be strange to experience a DC movie without that classic Zimmer sound, but it’s understandable after 5 films and 11 years.

It’s also worth remembering that Zimmer wasn’t the only composer working on Dawn of Justice. Junkie XL, who recently wrote the score for the wickedly successful Deadpool, also contributed some work to the film. You might recognise his guitar work on the parts of the film that focussed on Wonder Woman and the rest of the upcoming Justice League members. The two musicians have worked together before on the music for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Maybe the work between Zimmer and Junkie XL on Dawn of Justice was a DCEU handover of sorts. Could we be hearing Junkie XL’s work on the next Justice League project? We’ll have to wait and see.

God speed Mr Zimmer, we’ll be hearing from you soon. Get it? Because he’s a composer.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is out in cinemas now. Watch this space for all the latest Hans Zimmer movie news.
