The company responsible for the original Godzilla franchise that started way back in 1954 is bringing scaly back in this Godzilla Resurgence trailer.
The latest reboot of Godzilla from Legendary was something of a slam dunk. The sequel has already been confirmed, a crossover with King Kong is in the works and everyone seems to have forgotten about the Matthew Broderick giant velociraptor 1998 version. One of the highest points for Gareth Edwards‘ Godzilla was the validation it got from Toho, the Japanese production company that created the original Godzilla series. But we also learned that Toho already had plans of their own to bring the King of monsters back to the big screen. The result of those plans is Godzilla Resurgence. Check it out, courtesy of Deadline.
Let’s just sort out some of the basics. Yes, that is a man in a suit. There hasn’t been a man-dressed-as-Godzilla movie from Toho since Godzilla Final Wars which was released in 2004. But now he’s back, and he’s never looked better. Godzilla Resurgence has been directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi with a script by Hideaki.
If you’re not familiar with the kaleidoscope that is the Japanese film industry you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a spoof. But it’s 100% real and it’s 100% awesome. It’s clearly a person but they doesn’t mean it’s not scary as he’ll. Look at those hands!
Toho have done a fantastic job of bringing the feel of the original 1954 film back to the screen, and from the looks of the disaster scenes there’s clearly a decent budget behind Godzilla Resurgence.
Speaking of the movie title, it might sound familiar because it shares a subheading with the Independence Day sequel. While I’m not a huge fan of it as a subheading, I’m clearly in the minority since it’s been picked by two films in one year.
The most intriguing bit of news about Godzilla Resurgence is that it’ll be shown in IMAX. It’s not likely to be in IMAX’s in the US or UK, but it’d nearly be worth heading over to Japan to catch the premiere.
Godzilla Resurgence will hit theaters in Japan July 27th. Watch this space for all the latest Godzilla movie news.
