Comic legend Eddie Murphy says he’d do a superhero movie as long as he could make fun of them in the process. Read more after the jump.
All superhero movies are funny. Some are subtle, some are laugh-out-loud and some are a little lazy. But they all have humour in there somewhere. Even Batman made a joke in Dawn of Justice! Marvel has had a good run of hiring strong comic actors to give its movies some authentic humour. Robert Downey Jr was an early comic investment, followed by Chris Pratt and Paul Rudd. Now comic legend Eddie Murphy might be another comic name thrown into a comic book universe.
Screenrant is reporting that the Bowfinger star has had a think about how he’d work in a comic book movie. Murphy was speaking to Mashable in a recent interview and was asked if we’d be seeing him in a Marvel or DC movie. He had this to say.
“I’m kind of long in the tooth to fly in in a cape now, so I’d have to be like the voice of reason or somebody. “Don’t do that, super-fellow! Or we need such-and-such.” I would do a superhero movie if it was funny and we were making fun of superhero movies and I figured out how to do something funny. But even I don’t buy me flying in with a cape on and you know, fucking everybody up, having lasers shoot out.”
Soooooo is that a yes? Murphy doesn’t sound too jazzed about sporting a super-suit next summer. His recent movements back into dramatic work could have something to do with it. Murphy has been praised for his serious performance recently in Mr Church, despite the movie’s poor performance. Murphy could be looking at more serious roles in the not too distant future. A comedic role in a Marvel or DC movie could slow down that desired momentum.
However there is good reason for any superhero project to consider getting Murphy on board. As an actor he’s hugely recognisable. People have mostly forgiven him for the likes of Norbit, Meet Dave and Pluto Nash. Maybe this is the time for Murphy to look at Avengers application forms.
Mr Church is currently in theaters. Watch this space for all the latest Eddie Murphy movie news.
