Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance are potential cast members for Christopher Nolan’s account of the WW2 rescue at Dunkirk.
I’m not sure if I have that much in common with Michael Caine. However I’m sure we’re both excited about Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming project. Since his pioneering work on Interstellar last year there’s been a lot of buzz around what the director will do next. Rumours started floating around that Nolan was planning a World War 2 film. Now we have confirmation, but in classic Nolan style it’s not quite as simple as a standard WW2 flick. It’s going to be all about the rescue mission of Dunkirk.
The news from Slashfilm is that Nolan will start shooting the film, entitled Dunkirk, this coming Summer. It will tell the account of the Battle of Dunkirk, which was followed by a rescue on the Northern shores of France in 1940. A number of soldiers were stranded on the beach and had no means of escape. When word got out, a number private citizens set sail from England in their own boats to rescue the soldiers. This is a piece of military history already distinct with its own brand of heroism by everyday citizens. It’s no surprise that Christopher Nolan wants to capture the events in the big screen.
True to Nolan’s MO, Dunkirk will be as authentic as possible. The director has already scouted locations in the town of Dunkirk. The mayor of Dunkirk has also announced that a major motion picture will be filmed in their town.
So what kind of film is this going to be? The words action thriller are being thrown around at the moment. The news from The Wrap is that this will be a “large scale film”. Not only that, it will apparently be shot on IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film. This is all fantastic news for Nolan fans, who will no doubt be eager another large scale mind-melter from the director.
On the casting side, the news is that Tom Hardy is attached to the project, as well as Kenneth Branagh and Mark Rylance. So no role for Michael Caine, Chris?
Dunkirk is scheduled for a July 2017 release. Watch this space for the latest Dunkirk movie news.
