The Steve Jobs director is ready to get all nostalgic with plans to reunite the Trainspotting gang for a long-awaited sequel.

It’s been a big weekend for Danny Boyle. The director’s latest movie Steve Jobs got its first release at Telluride this weekend. The biopic written by Aaron Sorkin was an immediate hit, so you won’t have to look far for a glittering review. But Boyle isn’t resting on his laurels. The news is that in an interview Deadline at Telluride, Boyle said the much anticipated sequel is closer than ever to fruition. “All the four akin actors want to come back and do it…”, Boyle explained.
Made in 1996, Trainspotting followed the tragicomic delirium of a group of heroin addicts in Edinburgh. Since Telluride included Boyle receiving the Telluride Medal for his body of work, it seems an apt time to continue one of his crowning achievements. Boyle is referring to Johnny Lee Miller, currently starring as Sherlock Holmes in Elementary, and Robert Carlisle who has an ongoing role in Once Upon a Time. Ewan McGregor has already stated he’s on board for a sequel, and according to Boyle the same goes for the other stars, including Ewen Bremner, Kevin McKidd and Kelly McDonald.

The Trainspotting universe is already an extensive one. Irvine Welsh not only released a sequel (Porno), he also wrote a prequel called Skagboys. Screenwriter John Hodge is also returning, with a script based mainly on Welsh’s sequel that picks up 20 years after Trainspotting. Boyle has assured us the script is terrific – the two have worked on several projects since Trainspotting.

So the pieces are all out of the box, now Boyle just needs to pick the right time to get them all on the board. Since he wants this to be his next project, good fully it won’t be too long a wait.
