If there’s a binary of the Incredible Hulk in the DC Universe, it is without a doubt the badass element kryptonite. Why? Because it’s green, it doesn’t say much and it makes some of the strongest heroes look like jittery wimps of the highest calibre. What? Solomon Grundy? No, shut up, it’s kryptonite. Anyway, when will we get a chance to see the DC Hulk in action? A lot sooner than you think, if the reporters that be are to be believed.
Screen Rant is reporting that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will indeed incorporate the Man of Steel’s greatest weakness. We’ve already gotten a look at how the kryptonian environment makes Superman weak at the knees when he was on Zod’s ship in Man of Steel. Now we’ll see how Batman’s going to use it against his new foe, and it’s pretty save to assume it’ll be deliciously inventive.
In an EW article about a set of new photos were revealed from Zack Snyder‘s superhero smack down, beans were spilled on the use of the green stuff:
If you’re going toe-to-toe with the son of Jor-El, you better come correct. For his climactic rooftop brawl with Superman, Batman outfits himself with a reinforced mech-suit equipped with strength-augmenting armor and, yes, kryptonite. The design resembles the one used for the confrontation between these two in Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns.
It’s been no secret that The Dark Knight Returns has been a huge influence on Batman v Superman, which meant there was always a good chance Vitamin K would be brought in at some point or another. Of course they’ll first have to introduce kryptonite as a concept, given that it wasn’t introduced in Man of Steel. Will this be Lex Luthor’s part to play, establishing a long standing battle if wills against Superman by uncovering his main weakness. Alternatively, the kryptonite could be found in the debris left over by the invasion of the first film, paying some homage to Marvel’s use of Loki’s sceptre from Avengers to kick-start Age if Ultron.
In any case, it’s going to be a real treat to see how Snyder’s Batman brings special K to the table when they have their already legendary rooftop scuffle. Since it have to bring Superman man to his level and obviously can’t incapacitate him before they can duke it out, it’s got to be a tricky balance to maintain. Either that or Batman will just fit a tight kryptonite bowler hat to his foe’s head without him knowing. Yeah, yeah that’d be awesome.
Here’s some other bits and pieces from the EW article about scenes that have been lifted from Dark Knight Returns and nestled gently in the bosom of Batman v Superman:
– Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) and his loyal butler, Alfred (Jeremy Irons), are gravely intoning their lines into a burned-out fireplace, as Bruce prepares for his Valley of Elah moment with Superman. The billionaire vigilante appears weary but determined, not unlike the actor portraying him.
– In his editing suite in Pasadena last month, Snyder showed off early passes of the money sequence, a rainy rooftop battle between the two capes. There’s an undeniable thrill to watching these pop culture icons go at it–throwing each other through walls and skylights.
– Snyder also reveals a scene in the Batcave where Bruce Wayne outlines his motivations to a skeptical Alfred, a bit of realpolitik reasoning that weighs the morality of a preemptive strike on Superman against even the minimal chance of humanity’s destruction.
So there’s a lot to look forward to. Oh, maybe Alfred has the kryptonite! Sorry, sorry.
The DC grudge match lands March 25th, 2016.
