Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell both have sequels in the works in anticipation of jump-starting the genre.
The recent news that the game series Thief would be brought to the big screen proved one thing. Video game adaptations are hard to get excited about. Not that we really needed to prove that. It’s hard to have high hopes for game movies after such a high volume of poor showings. Big titles Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell have shown glimmers of hope for the genre, but it may be more than glimmers. It looks like sequels are already on the bill.
The news from Screenrant.com is that Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell both have follow-up movies in the works. The announcement comes from co-financier of both projects Catchplay.
This forward planning shows a lot of promise in the two franchises, not to mention a lot riding on them. Assassin’s Creed – with Michael Fassbender as the titular killer – in particular is a big project for Ubisoft. Not only will it the next stage in an already impossibly popular franchise, but it will set the tone for more Ubisoft movie games. Needless to say, a lot is riding on this being the second successful Creed film this year. The question is, are the sequel plans in response to positive hype, or are they supposed to incite the hype?
As for Splinter Cell, the first film is barely on solid ground. The plan is for Tom Hardy to play goggle-wearing secret agent Sam Fisher with Doug Liman directing. However with Hardy gearing up for Christopher Nolan’ Dunkirk biopic and Liman directing Gambit – both in 2017 – their involvement is far from dependable. If both talents were confirmed then it would be understandable that a sequel was in the bank. But with their involvement in question, it seems overly ambitious to plan so far ahead.
That being said, Catchplay and Ubisot know more about these projects than we do. Maybe they have good reason to be planning some sequels. Hopefully we’ll have a better idea once the first movies solidify.
