Adi Shankar is something of a cinematic resistance fighter. Even if you talk his big budget work out of the picture, including production credits on Dredd and Lone Survivor, he is still making substantial waves with the shorts that make up his edgy Bootleg Universe. Now it looks as though he’s making the move to directing with his new project Gods and Secrets. Empire is reporting that Shankar will share the directing role on this new venture with Stewart Yost, with Shawn Deloache providing the script. Gods and Secrets is set to be a superhero movie, but not as we know it. Apparently it will build upon the foundation of established superhero movies and go one step further, probing the impacts that the hero’s actions have on people’s lives and on the world around them.
This sounds like it’s right in Shankar’s wheelhouse. The director/producer has made a name for himself with his Bootleg Universe of shorts, in no small part because they focus on the darker roles real life issues of established characters including The Punisher, Venom and the Power Rangers. If he can translate that investigative, gritty energy in this new project then it could definitely be something to be reckoned with.
Gods and Secrets has a mammoth cast already, including with a cast that includes Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone, Denise Richards, Jane Seymour, Sharni Vinson, Alexandra Billings, Andy Milonakis and wrestler “Diamond” Dallas Page.
The project is still in its infancy but hopefully we will get a better idea of the players and the plot of this dark superhero fable in the near future.
